Sagicor has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Barbados Community College (BCC) to provide a framework for learning and enhancing training in senior care, not only for The Estates at St. George residential project currently under construction but also to improve caregiving overall in the country.
It is expected that more than 100 persons will gain employment once the Estates at St George is completed, along with three dozen health care aides workers were needed and there would be opportunities for additional jobs in areas such as catering, housekeeping, maintenance, security and administration.
Dr. Jeannine Comma, a director of Sagicor, said the initiative aims to increase the number of qualified professionals delivering world class care, which was the promise of The Estates experience.
Dr Comma said that “The warmth and sensitivity of our people is what makes us who we are, and we must ensure that our care givers reconnect with that ethos in their care of our seniors.”
Sagicor’s strategic partner in the management of The Estates, Origin Active Lifestyle Communities Inc., she noted, was looking forward to working with the Barbados Community College “to assist Sagicor and BCC to effectively respond to the changing needs of older adults.”
President of Origin Active Lifestyle Neil Prashad said “We are helping Sagicor’s vision become a reality, and a key component is to provide a high level of service expected at the Estates. We will establish a solid working relationship and cooperation with BCC to help Sagicor’s vision come to fruition,” said Prashad.
Chief Executive Officer of Sagicor Financial Corporation Dodridge Miller said the goal was not just about fulfilling the requirements of the Estates but an “opportunity to build much-needed capacity in an area that is critical to the well being of our citizens as they transition through their senior years”.
Annette Alleyne, Principal of BCC, said the college will focus on “the delivery of students with a professionalism and maturity that will be evident, in how care is delivered.”
